What Can a Chiropractor Do for You

Sean Gallagher, D.C. student

A chiropractor can do much more than just help relieve back pain. Chiropractors are not necessary back, neck or even bone doctors. In stead they focus on nerves and interference to the nerves of the body. Therefore, people of all types of health conditions can benefit from treatment provided from this type of care.

So what does a chiropractor really do then?
Chiropractors correct misalignments in the spine and joints of the body in order to remove interference to the nerves caused by these misalignments. Misalignments of joins in the body and spine are called subluxations. Therefore, it can be said that chiropractors correct subluxations.

What is a subluxation?
A subluxation is defined as an "Incomplete or partial dislocation of a bone in a joint" (On-line Medical Dictionary). This is similar but not the same as a complete dislocation, which is called a luxation. Because subluxations are only an incomplete or partial dislocation you may not even know that you have a subluxation. Its like having a picture frame on the wall to your eye it is lined up straight, but with a ruler you find you are off by just a hair. The same goes with your body it may feel like it is lined up straight but you may be off just a hair.

So how does even a hair missalignment in my joints effect me?
Misalignments in the joints, specially in the spine, can cause pressure, irritation, and interference to the nerves. The function of the bones in your spine it to protect your nervous system. If one of those bones is missaligned you can have pressure, irritation, or interference on the nerves that this particular bone protect.

What does pressure, iritation, and interference to a nerve do?
Pressure, irritation, and interference to a nerve can cause may problems. Depending on the severity of the misalignment, it can result in headaches, back pain, neck pain, depressed immune system, depressed mobility, and depression to just about every functions you body has (remember your spinal cord controls some functions its self and relays all other funtions through input, and output signals of your brain, so in effect any type of heath condition can arize from a missalignment).

So how do I know if I have a Subluxation?
Thats easy, just visit you local chiropractor and have him or her do an initial screening of your spine. They may take some x-rays to help determine if you have any missalignments. Please take a look at our online directory to locate a doctor near you, click on the link below.
